10-12 February 2010. Among other minor events, the last couple of days included a tour of Gaudí and Güell’s first major project, Palau Güell, or Güell’s downtown city house next to Barcelona’s La Rambla. (And yes, this is the same Güell of the Park Güell) 10feb_007

Palau Güell was Gaudí’s first major project, and was the perfect one to get a struggling architect on his feet and doing what he is truly capable of. The project was of an unlimited budget, and it shows in everything from the materials chosen to the size of the place. Now, a UNESCO World Heritage site along with other Gaudí works, the house stood as a monument to not only Gaudí’s architecture and style, but to Güell’s family, fortune, and influence on the city.

Our tour was not all that long, nor could we see majority of the building, but the little we did see was pretty awesome. The basement featured a place for horses to stay out of the weather and was a neat space to be in.

After the short tour of Palau Güell, we headed tover to the original Barcelona hospital, famous as the place Gaudí died. We headed in for a look to find the place has been renovated into a library. After a quick round and flurry of interest in getting library cards, we headed out and off to lunch in search for that perfect restaurant: pretty much any place that takes MagdaBucks (Sodexho Restaurant Passes).

The city is a neat place to be during the night, the sounds and sights that you don’t get in many places such as my home town all that much. Sights like Casa Mila and Casa Batllo lit up and ferrari’s driving around. The cheering of a futból game to your friend counting traffic lanes for a studio project (all in the name of architectural studio :)
