21 January 2010 marks the day we had our first Spanish exams, the end of our visual culture class, and the day I caught up in writing my posts. The day was perfect, blue skies, sun shine, warm temperature, and excitement. View Full Article »

Pavilions and Museums

20 January 2010 was a good day for checking out some of the jewels Barcelona has hidden away. We began the warm yet cloudy day with an onsite class at the Pavello de la Republica in the Vallcarca neighborhood of Barcelona. View Full Article »

19 January 2010 was yet another rainy day in Barcelona – oh well. We reviewed films that feature or has the city as the backdrop. Of the movies we reviewed, my favorites were the Spanish Apartment and Vicky Christina Barcelona. We also watched some spanish and french films that were not in english. View Full Article »

Design

18 January 2010 was the day we talked about design and Barcelona. As one of the world’s design capitals, it is funny how the city and nation’s history lead to it’s current position. Design among many things were becoiming strong forces within Spain and Catalunya before Franco came in and halted the freedom of design that had been flourishing. View Full Article »

Partying

16-17 January 2010 was the weekend. Although small adventures did not warrant photographs, the parties we were heading to did. While some of the gang went to Bilbao and San Sabastian, we went to a birthday party after a fun dinner of tapas and capa rosa (rose champagne). While parties in flats in the city center are rare, this one was an exception. It was a ton of fun, and we met and mingled with the local students and had fun trying to find the place and running back to the store to get the drinks no one picked up after paying. The exhibition focused on photography and the city, and how the city’s history was photographed. The exhibition was very cool, and could keep you busy for hours. View Full Article »

14 January was an exciting day, after the morning’s spanish lessons and a class on visual culture, I bolted out fly my kite on the edge of the Med. This was the 2nd day the weather reports online have failed me, tomorrow will be a test of a third source. Oh well. As for wind, Windfinder works like a charm and perfectly predicted a great day to fly my kite.

13 January was a nice day, and hopefully the beginning of great weather for the rest of my time here. The weather of Barcelona has been pretty cool, colder then normal. With temperatures under 10 celsius and rain, no fun – until today. Perfect blue skies and beautiful weather couldn’t be better. Our class lead us to the Port Olympic area of Barcelona, checking out the architecture and spaces of the area. View Full Article »

12 January began with the exploration of the barcelona model of urban regeneration and a discussion on public spaces. The city is abundant with public spaces, from complete city blocks in L’Eixample to the beach and up to Montjuic and Park Güell. The focus of class was more on small plazas and squares, and the center courtyards of the inner city L’Eixample blocks. View Full Article »

Barcelona has a fascinating history beginning as a Roman retreat. Like Shrek, the city it similar to an onion, which you can peel off layers of history and discover the life of the Catalonian city through the ages. Although many parts of the city’s history have been lost or covered up, Rome’s mark is still visible under the metropolis. View Full Article »
